 Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Outreach Officer

 

SWOP is seeking an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community member to work as part of the SWOP outreach team. The position provides outreach to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people engaged in sex work and providing sex for favours across NSW, with the aim of encouraging and supporting safer behaviours and empowering these community members to protect themselves and improve their health and wellbeing.

Note: Aboriginality is a genuine requirement of this position as per Section 14 of the NSW Anti-Discrimination Act, 1977. 

Previous direct experience in the sex industry is essential, as is a NSW drivers licence and some outdoor and evening work. All information provided by applicants is kept confidential and only viewed by the interview panel. 

This is a part time position three days per week (21 hours/week) and based in Surry Hills. 

There is no closing date for applications for this position.

POSITION DETAILS

Position Title:                SWOP Aboriginal Outreach Worker 

Classification:                SCHADS Award Level 3

Reports to:                     Outreach and Community Services Manager, SWOP

Location:                        Surry Hills

 POSITION OVERVIEW

Develop and implement health promotion activities that enable Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people who are engaged in sex work and sex for favours in the Greater Sydney area as well as rural/regional NSW to improve their health and wellbeing.

 MAIN ACTIVITIES

  • Provide outreach, education and support primarily to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people who are engaged in sex work and sex for favours in NSW, as well as to other sex industry workers in relation to HIV, sexual health and related issues.
  • Review and develop education resources to improve understanding of HIV, sexual health and related issues among Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people who are engaged in sex work and sex for favours.
  • Provide information and training to SWOP staff and other service providers on issues faced by Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people who are engaged in sex work and sex for favours.
  • Represent SWOP by attending and participating in events and days of importance for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities in NSW.
  • Continually build and enhance partnerships with agencies and external service providers to ensure coordinated responses to the needs of people engaged in sex work and sex for favours.
  • Collect and maintain appropriate statistics, administrative records and written reports.
  • Actively participate in and contribute to an ongoing process of supervision, unit meetings, team meetings, general staff meetings, quality improvement and professional development strategies.
  • Maintain a professional standard of behaviour and ensure confidentiality at all times.
  • Perform other duties to assist with the work of the unit as requested by the line Manager (or designate). 

 SELECTION CRITERIA

Essential

  • Lived experience of sex work and knowledge of the sex industry.
  • Understanding of and sensitivity to issues for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people engaged in sex work and sex for favours.
  • Basic understanding of and willingness to train further in HIV, sexual health/STIs and BBVs (such as Hepatitis C).
  • Ability to communicate well with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people engaged in sex work/sex for favours, service providers and co-workers.
  • Ability to write well and use relevant office computer programs such as email and Microsoft Word.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • A full current NSW Drivers Licence.
  • Capacity and willingness to travel in NSW.

Desirable

  • Experience providing outreach services.
  • Experience delivering training to service providers.
  • Experience co-ordinating stalls or events.

 Additional Information

This is a part time position (21 hours/week).

The hourly rate paid will at Level 3 – Pay Point 1 or above  (Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010)

Superannuation and leave loading on annual leave.
